After withdrawing three cemeteries, PTC council approves minor rezonings

A number of "housekeeping" rezonings were approved by the Peachtree City Council last week. But several of the proposed rezonings from city staff were deleted from the list after some questions arose on the properties, all three of which are cemeteries. The remaining 11 parcels, most of which were city-owned properties, were all rezoned to open space. The Whitlock Cemetery on Northlake Drive, the Bethlehem Church Cemetary on Dividend Drive and the Westminster Cemetery on Ga. Highway 54 were pulled from the list, however. Two deacons from Bethlehem Church had objected to that rezoning, while it was learned that the Whitlock Cemetery is too small to be classified as open space, which requires a minimum size of 10 acres. As for Westminster Cemetery, council dropped it from the list to rezone as open space after councilman Dan Tennant questioned whether this would forbid any other business activity at the privately-owned site. Currently, the property is zoned estate residential, but a cemetery is one of the uses allowed under that zoning category, said City Attorney Rick Lindsey. All of the property owners had been notified of the city's intent to rezone the property, as had all the adjacent property owners and other property owners with 200 feet of the parcels in question, said City Planner David Rast. But resident Frances Meaders questioned that, saying she lived within 200 feet of one of the parcels but was not notified. She also said that area, called the Willow Creek Open Space, could not be developed anyway and is part of a city greenbelt.
