Will copter proposal fly this week?

Everything old is new again at the Fayette County Commission meeting tomorrow night.

Included in the items that were tabled at the Sept. 12 meeting that will be discussed tomorrow is the Fayette County Sheriff's Department controversial purchase of a helicopter.

Maj. Bruce Jordan explained the purchase at the earlier meeting, but came under fire for not informing the board of his purchase.

Jordan countered that Commission Chairman Greg Dunn had given his "blessing" for the purchase and wouldn't hold a meeting on the subject until he had the votes.

The department also came under fire for titling the copter in the board's name and also insuring it for $1 million dollars.

But Jordan said he was only doing the traditional government policy on insurance, and the copter had to be insured to be flown to Fayette from New Hampshire.

Jordan asked the board to pay $50,000 for fuel and maintenance costs for the rest of the budget year and is expected to get an answer Thursday.

The board will also consider a proposal by Commissioner Linda Wells to give the Fayette Samaritans $25,000 this year. The group is seeking a permanent home and Wells said the county should help the group, since they help other social programs, such as Fayette Senior Services.

The final item carried over from the Sept. 12 meeting is a proposal to build a "pole barn" to help support a farmers' market in the community.

Commissioner A.G. VanLandingham want the farmer's market to sell only locally grown produce, and believes it could help local farmers. But Dunn is not so sure about spending county funds to support a for-profit business.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Fayette County Administrative Complex.
