Judge honored by child councel
Fulton County Juvenile Court Chief Presiding Judge Nina Hickson will receive a 2002 Outstanding Child Advocacy Award presented by the National Association of Counsel for Children (NACC). The award will be presented at a ceremony September 28 during the NACC's National Children's Law Conference in Orlando, Florida. An advocate from Boston, Mass. will also receive an award. The NACC is a professional membership and child advocacy organization. Judge Hickson is being honored for making important contributions toward the safety and well-being of children. Appointed to the Fulton County Juvenile Court in May 1999, Judge Hickson was a major proponent of legislation, which passed in March 2000, making the pimping of minors a felony offense. She was instrumental in the establishment of "Angela's House," a safe house for sexually exploited girls. Judge Hickson also founded the Sister2Sister mentoring program, which she created with the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys and first-time juvenile offenders. Judge Hickson plans to continue using her role as Chief Presiding Judge of the Fulton County Juvenile Court to ensure that the Court remains child-focused. "It is indeed an honor to be recognized by this organization of child advocates," says Judge Hickson.
