Covered courts at PTC Tennis Center used for first time at tourney By JOHN
MUNFORD The new covered tennis courts at the Peachtree City Tennis Center got their first workout Saturday as a rain storm forced several matches off the facility's outdoor courts for the Goody Products USTA Women's Pro Championship. The indoor courts have not been officially opened yet, but it was nice to have them as an option for the tournament, said Virgil Christian, executive director of the Peachtree City Development Authority, which operates the tennis center. The indoor courts "worked great," Christian said. "It was kinda neat. We were able to get those matches in." This is the eighth year the tennis center has hosted the USTA Women's Pro Championship, but the first time rain has become an issue, Christian said. Word has already gotten around Atlanta about the indoor courts, as several metro tennis groups called to inquire about the courts' availability Saturday, Christian said, adding that local groups will take priority. Christian said he thinks the indoor courts "will help our business model." The courts are part of the final phase of expanding the tennis center, which includes a new building to house tennis center offices with locker rooms and a restaurant that overlooks several outdoor courts. The weekend rain did force the postponement of the Georgia Tennis Festival, which will likely be rescheduled for October, Christian added.
