Airport Authority wants longer deal for hotel-motel tax revenues

Representatives from the Peachtree City Council and Airport Authority met last week to continue negotiations on a new hotel-motel tax contract between the two parties.

While an agreement has not yet been reached, the remaining sticking point has been narrowed down to the length of the contract. Authority officials want a term of 10 years on the deal to give them stability and allow them to fund necessary improvements.

But the City Council is looking for a shorter length on the contract, so as not to encumber future councils from spending the hotel-motel tax revenues as they see fit.

Some of the city's hotel-motel tax revenues are passed on to the authority to help fund capital projects and improvements.

Authority Chairwoman Cathy Nelmes said the council is very supportive of their plans for Falcon Field, but the authority needs to consider matters brought up at the negotiations before making a decision.

Mayor Steve Brown, who is not directly involved in the negotiations, said he thinks an agreement with the authority "is doable ... but I don't think we're quite there yet."
