EMC getting in gas business

Coweta Fayette Electric Membership Corporation (EMC), through its affiliate EMC Natural Gas, applied to the Georgia Public Service Commission on September 13 to become a certified natural gas marketer.

"We plan to slowly enter into the market," said Daniel Hart, Chief Operating Officer of EMC Natural Gas. "We'll first concentrate inside our territory on customers served by Atlanta Gas Light Company (AGLC) pipes and then expand outside."

The company could possibly have customers receiving gas by the end of the year, depending on the speed of the approval process and completion of the data interface with AGLC.

Hart added that EMC Natural Gas, doing business as Coweta-Fayette EMC Natural Gas, will produce easy to understand bills and simple pricing structures.

"Our competitive price for gas will include the purchase cost of natural gas, interstate pipeline charges to move the gas to Georgia and associated reserves to protect our customers from winter price spikes. Atlanta Gas and Light charges for gas delivery within Georgia will be passed through exactly as EMC Natural Gas receives them."

Gas customers will be able to choose monthly pricing with no contract required. Other potential plans include fixed pricing that allows consumers to lock in gas prices for months at a time.

EMC Natural Gas will be governed by a six member board, three EMC Board members; Neal Shepard of Coweta County, Elwood Thompson of Coweta County and Alice Mallory of Fayette County plus three outside members that include Lee Hunter of Coweta County, Elaine Gaillard of Fayette County and Mark Hall of Fayette County.

Coweta-Fayette EMC provides electricity and other services to over 61,000 consumers in one of the nation's fastest-growing areas, including Coweta, Fayette, South Fulton, Heard, Meriwether, Spalding and Troup counties. The company has worked hard for over 50 years to keep cost down, charging a fair price for electricity and providing reliable service.
