Staging area for lake dredging set, but it may not be needed

County water officials are nearing a "legal agreement" with Peachtree City to have access to Drake Field to stage materials for dredging Lake Peachtree later this year. The city wants to make sure the water system commits to restoring the area back to its original state once the project is finished, said consulting engineer Jim Mallett. But it's still not cleaar if the area will be needed. The water system plans to hold a wide-open bidding process which allows contractors to submit bids on performing the project in any manner they see fit. "We're very close to going out for bids," Mallett said. The county's Water Committee will then evaluate each bid, but price will likely be one of the main concerns. "We're telling each bidder that we have a place for a staging area," Mallett said. The water system already has a permit from the state Department of Transportation to build a road off Ga. Highway 54 so trucks and heavy equipment can bypass the regular route to city hall and the library, Mallett said. Estimates call for approximately 22,000 cubic yards of sediment to be removed from the lake, which is owned by Peachtree City. The county water system uses Lake Peachtree as a reservoir through a special agreement which requires the county to periodically perform the dredging activities.
