Student attends medicine forum
Andrew Nonni, 16, of Peachtree City participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF/MED) at Emory University in July. NYLF/MED is a career development program for high school students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential and an interest in medicine. Nonni joined approximately 350 other high school students from around the country. Throughout the ten-day forum, students had the opportunity to observe doctors and other medical professionals performing actual procedures and go on rounds with them. "It was a good experience," said Nonni. "It gave me a real life look at the field of medicine." Nonni was among a group of students that went to Grady Memorial Hospital and visited their huge trauma center. He and fellow students also debated medical ethics problems while at Emory. "The best part was visiting the clinics and hospitals," said Nonni. "Spending ten days at Emory made him understand how serious it is," said Nonni's father, Arthur Nonni. "And he's still interested." Nonni, a junior at McIntosh High School and baseball player, wants to go into the field of sports medicine. "The National Youth Leadership forum offers an invaluable perspective for students who participate in the forum on Medicine," said Donna Weldin, executive director of NYLF. "The relationships we forge with health care facilities and education institutions throughout the country afford these young people with an eye-opening experience, introducing them to the broad spectrum of medical careers." NYLF is a nonprofit educational organization that brings various professions to life. In addition to forums on medicine, NYLF offers programs for students interested in law or national security. For additional information, visit their website at www.nylf.org. Nonni is the son of Peachtree city residents Lynne & Arthur Nonni.
