Y-Guide program for parents and children
"A unique opportunity for parents to spend one-on-one time with their young children is being provided by the Fayette Family YMCA through its Y-Guide program," said Pam Young, executive director of the YMCA. Through this program whose stated purpose is to strengthen families fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters participate in fun and educational activities which help them communicate with each other and grow as a family. Activities range from cookouts and craft projects to events such as camping, caving, and an Indian festival. "One key feature of this program which makes Y-Guides special is the requirement that parent and child participate together," said Young. "The Y offers several programs for children in the summer, but a child can't join Y-Guide programs unless the parent does." Another component of the program that makes it unique is that meetings, usually held once a month, are not at the Y but in the homes of the participants. Staff members are always available to advise and help facilitate the program which is developed primarily by the participants themselves. Last year 120 parents and children participated in the Y-Guide program in the Fayette County area. The Y-Guide program is for children in grades K-3, 4 and 5 and their parents. The program fee is $50 for one parent and child, and $25 for each additional family member. The program fee also includes program materials and books. Elective event costs will vary depending on the event. Additional membership in the YMCA is $35 per family. For more information, contact the Fayette Family YMCA at 770-719-9622.
