Spy games at GOP breakfast?
Last weekend's Fayette County Republican Breakfast was the site of some interesting political gamesmanship, as attendees got a taste of what the future holds for the opponent of Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor, the Democratic incumbent, in this fall's election. First, neither of the Republican candidates in yesterday's runoff showed up at the meeting due to a scheduling snafu. Next, Taylor sent a representative to videotape the meeting. This practice is often used in political races, so that candidates can use statements by opponents as ammunition for political advertisements. The operative sat quietly at the bar until the meeting started, then set up his camera and began filming as GOP chairman Lane Watts opened the meeting. Watts recognized the cameraman, who responded by waving to the crowd. Then, when Fayette Commission Chairman Greg Dunn got up to speak, he waved at the camera before standing directly in front of it with his back blocking the view. The Taylor representative then quietly packed up his gear and left. Emory Wilkerson, candidate for the District 34 State Senate seat being vacated by Greg Hecht, spoke to the group after Dunn's remarks. Wilkerson will face the winner of yestserday's runoff for the seat, which encompasses parts of Tyrone and Fayetteville and reaches into Clayton County.
