Seminar planned for parents of exceptional children

The first parent mentor workshop for parents of exceptional children will be held this month at the LaFayette Educational Center in Fayetteville.

Victor Hobbs, former director of the Georgia Learning Resources System in Macon, will present a seminar focused on children with learning disabilities entitled "Helping Your Child Be Successful." The presentation will take place Sept. 21 from 9 a.m.-noon.

Some of the topics Hobbs addresses includes expectations, routines, anger management, self-control and teaching appropriate student social behavior. He addresses character education and improved achievement by teaching students, parents and teachers to know, expect and practice the highest standards.

The seminar is free and open to the public. Reservations are needed to ensure ample seating. Parents can reserve seats by calling Nick Harris, Fayette County's parent mentor, at 678-364-8588.

Hobbs has been in the training field since 1970. He has designed and delivered training at all organizational levels. He has presented over 700 workshops, courses and seminars to volunteer groups, governmental agencies, colleges and universities, public and private schools and businesses.

Hobbs is the past governor of the Georgia Council of Administrators of Special Education. As a member of the Georgia Federation's Council for Exceptional Children, he served as state president, vice-president, conference chairman and editor of "CEC Matters," the federation's newsletter.
