PTC mayor airs beef with veteran council member
By JOHN
MUNFORD
Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown has pledged not to sue former mayor Bob Lenox in retribution for Lenox's claims that Brown stole city services on several different occasions. "I refuse to go there," Brown said in a letter to the editor in today's paper. But in the same letter, Brown indicates that he is unhappy with veteran councilwoman Annie McMenamin, and he would like to have someone else appointed to the position of mayor pro tem. "Once the Brown, Tennant, Rapson and Weed team got into office, we decided to put forth an olive branch and select Annie McMenamin as Mayor Pro Tem and show her that we were willing to work with her," Brown wrote. "Ms. McMenamin burned that branch, spit on the ashes and threw them in our face." Asked for comment about the matter Tuesday afternoon, McMenamin replied, "That immature comment is not worthy of a response." Brown has made no secret of his displeasure with McMenamin, who has opposed several of his key proposals, including the creation of a separate sports and entertainment authority to run the amphitheater and tennis center and the creation of a special tax district for businesses locating on the Ga. Highway 54 West corridor. "The bottom line is that four out of the five members on the City Council want to get on with business and we willing work with anyone wanting to be involved," Brown said. "We have some exciting things ahead and we are also facing some major challenges that need to be dealt with as soon as possible." In the letter, Brown referred to learning at the arrest hearing that "a breach exists" at City Hall. Brown also attributes the recent spate of political fighting to "a group of people that some of us refer to as the government in exile. "This band is made up of former elected officials, losing candidates and some of their friends," Brown said.
