Fayette 9-11 observances planned Compiled by MICHAEL BOYLAN
From a 8:30 a.m. flag-raising assembly at Peachtree City's J.C. Booth Middle School to a multi-church unity service in Fayetteville, Fayette Countians will be observing the one-year anniversary of 9-11, the date Muslim terrorists attacked the United States of America. Booth staff and students will pledge allegiance to the flag and then move inside to the gym where they will hear patriotic music from band and chorus. Speakers will include a retired New York City firefighter, airline pilots and a U.S. Navy Pentagon worker. At 10:05 a.m., church bells throughout the city will ring and representatives from the Peachtree City fire and police departments will lay a memorial wreath at the flagpole near the entrance to the Frederick Brown Amphitheater off McIntosh Trail. Local clergy will be on hand at 11 a.m., 1, 3 and 5 p.m to deliver 15-minute messages of remembrance. Six area churches will have a joint interracial, interdenominational service Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at River's Edge Community Church, 1091 South Jeff Davis Dr., Fayetteville. Participating churches are River's Edge, North Fayette Baptist, New Generation Christian Fellowship, Community Christian, New Covenant Metropolitan, Edgefield Baptist and Fayetteville Church of God. The theme of the joint meeting is "There's hope in Jesus Christ." Open Holy Communion will be served. A remembrance program will take place at 7 p.m. at the Brown Amphitheater and will feature a military color guard, a Boy Scout troop, the Peachtree City Wind Ensemble, Music Alive, other guest performers and local clergy reading selected pieces. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church will hold worship services of remembrance, prayer and healing at noon and 7 p.m. Both services will feature music, guest clergy and the sacrament of Holy Communion. Rolling Hills Baptist Church will present "God Bless America Prayer and Remembrance Service" at 6:30 p.m. There will be a special Communion Service of Remembrance at Hopewell United Methodist Church in Tyrone at 7 p.m. to remember all of those who were lost due to last years attack. Clayton College and State University will have a Liberty Tree planting ceremony from 12:30-1:30 p.m. The ceremony will be emceed by SGA President Rachel Van Ness and will include reflections by three Clayton State students Bent Tree Editor Kevin Dixon, Gerald Heavens and Bethany Townsend. Also featured will be performances by three members of the Clayton State Gospel Choir, students Jenny King, Celeste Watwood and Nicole Connell. The Hampton Inn in Newnan will honor all police, sheriff and firefighter personnel with an open house from 6 a.m.-7 p.m. There will be refreshments throughout the day.
