Offshoot offers several classes this fall

Offshoot Productions artistic director Susan M. Steadman, Ph.D. will teach three acting classes through the Peachtree City Department of Recreation.

"Voice and Movement for the Stage," a class especially for homeschooled youngsters, will be held Tuesdays, Oct. 1-29, from 1-2 p.m. Designed to provide individualized attention as well as group work for participants ages 8 to 14, the course includes acting exercises, improvisation and scene work help young actors make the most of their natural abilities.

The second class, "Making a Scene," will take place Thursdays, Oct. 3-24, from 7:15-9:00 p.m. Participants ages 14 through adult will explore creating a believable scene, with emphases on creating characters, analyzing the script, relating to others on stage, and establishing the "illusion of the first time." The fee for each of the above classes is $42.

The third offering is "Creative Dramatics," which is open to children ages 5 to 7. Slated for Wednesdays, Oct. 2-30, from 3 p.m.-3:50 p.m., this lively class for beginning actors helps build self-confidence and imagination as it teaches children stage basics. Children who have previously taken creative dramatics classes or workshops with Offshoot Productions staff members are welcome to enroll, as the content is always different. The cost for this class is $40.

Dr. Steadman, who has directed over fifty productions for professional, alternative, community and educational theatres from New Jersey to Texas, has taught theatre at universities and private schools, and conducted workshops at numerous theatre conferences. A produced playwright and member of the Dramatists Guild, she has also authored several articles on theatre and a well-received book on dramatic literature and performance. She holds a Ph.D. in Theatre from Louisiana State University and a master's degree in Educational Theatre from New York University.

She says she is "delighted to be working the Peachtree City Department of Recreation once again." During the past year she has taught several acting classes as well as a summer theatre camp for the Recreation Department.
