Sewer coming to western part of county

Residents in the Westside community near Newnan will soon see some relief for their rapidly failing and defunct septic systems.

Last month, the Coweta County Commission announced the county had received a $489,000 Community Development Block Grant from the state to install a sewer system in the Westside Community.

The community has nearly 50 homes that have had septic problems. Some of the homes are currently being served by outhouses, said county administrator Theron Gay.

Coweta County will have to provide nearly $190,000 in matching funds, but Commissioner Robert Wood said it's well worth it.

"This is something we've been working on for more than two years and we could not have got thsi grant without Sarah Thomas," He said.

Thomas has been th spokesperson for the community and worked closely with Wood to obtain the grant.

"A lot of times, we would have a meeting on this issue, and Sarah and I would be the only ones there," Wood said.

Gay said the engineering work on the project is currently underway and a construction timetable is being created.

The county currently maintains a small sewer system in the Shenandoah Industrial Park that also serves part of the White Oak community.
