Memory Walk leaders speak to Kiwanis
By CAROLYN
CARY
Iola Snow and Fred Brown, co-chairs of the local Alzheimer's Association, spoke to the Fayette Metro Kiwanis about its 5k Memory Walk in October. They pointed out that there are 140,000 citizens in Georgia with the disease and 10,000 in the Southern Crescent, which include four counties. Interested participants should gather on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater for the 3.1 mile walk. Registration will be from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Runners will start at 9:15 a.m. and walkers start at 9:30 a.m. Gold's Gym will be on hand to properly warm everyone up and there will be water available every mile. A local jazz group will be playing for those who end back up at the amphitheater and the Peachtree City Kiwanis will be supplying hot dogs. In the year 2000 in Peachtree City, there were 450 workers, walkers and volunteers who raised $73,000. Last year there were 850 who participated, and they raised $117,000. From the time a person is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, he or she probably will only live seven more years, according to experts.
