Several Sept. 11 events scheduled for Peachtree City
The public is invited to participate in a number of events in Peachtree City to mark the one-year anniversary of the tragic actions on Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorist attacks took more than 3,000 lives in New York, Washington D.C. and Shanksville, Penn. At 10:05 a.m. (the time the south tower of the World Trade Center collapsed), church bells throughout the city will ring for one minute in memory of the lives lost. At the same time, Peachtree City fire and police representatives will lay a memorial wreath at the flagpole near the entrance to the Amphitheater, and the fire department will perform the five-bell ceremony, signifying the last call for firefighters who have died in service. The Eternal Vigilance Wreath, created this Memorial Day, will also be posted there, as well as representative photos. Local clergy will be on hand to deliver messages that will help people commemorate the day, and will also be on hand at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to deliver 15-minute messages of remembrance. Organizers said the intent is to provide a central place where people can go to congregate and reflect on how these events have changed our lives. They added that it will be very informal; just a place where people can gather, or reflect alone if they wish. A remembrance program will be held at 7 p.m. at the Amphitheater. The gates will open at 6:30 p.m. for informal community gathering. Taped commemorative music will be played and non-alcoholic beverages will be available. From 7 to 8 p.m. a more formal program will be presented, featuring a military color guard presenting the Colors, singing of the National Anthem, and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance led by a Boy Scout troop. The Peachtree City Wind Ensemble, Music Alive and other guest performers will provide musical interludes, many which will be sing-a-longs. Local clergy will read selected pieces appropriate to the occasion. Bagpiper Kent McVay will also perform at the event. There are no reserved seats. Participation is on a first-come basis. All events will be held rain or shine. Participants are reminded that this is a non-alcoholic event. Non-alcoholic beverages will be available while they last. People are welcomed to bring picnic lunches and make this a family outing. For more information, contact the Recreation Department at 770-631-2542. The events of Sept. 11, will also be commemorated at Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church by two "Worship Services of Remembrance, Prayer and Healing." Services are planned for noon and 7 p.m. on the anniversary of that date, at the Peachtree City church. The noontime service will include instrumental music by Darla Wilmot, Kathy Rothfusz, music director David Beecher and others. The Rev. David Epps of Christ the King Episcopal Church and the Rev. John Weber of Christ Our Shepherd will offer messages of hope and healing. The evening service will include the instrumental music of the adult hand bell choir, the Martin Rudy Brass Quartet, Don Wilmot, Rothfusz, Beecher and others. Boy Scouts will present the colors and there will be a ballet interpretation of America the Beautiful. The adult choir will present music of hope and reliance on God's promises. Messages of hope and healing will be offered by the Rev. Ronald Warren, bishop of the Southeastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The Rev. Miriam Beecher of Christ Our Shepherd will also preach. Both services will include the sacrament of Holy Communion and will be rich with music, scripture, readings, and prayers. A slide presentation of remembrance during the prelude will also depict children's understanding of Jesus' love and care for his people. Worship leaders include children, military and airline personnel, Stephen Ministers, and the prayer team. All airline, fire, police, military and medical personnel are invited to come in uniform to honor those who have been on alert and have stood strong on America's behalf. The public is also welcome. The church is located at 101 Peachtree Pkwy. North. For further information, call 770-487-8717.
