PTC mayor orders stop on help to Airport Authority

Wanting to increase revenues at Falcon Field, Peachtree City's Airport Authority is anxious to get an access road paved to new hangar sites it has built.

But Mayor Steve Brown has ordered city staff to stop working with Falcon Field officials on the Stallings Road project "pending consummation of a revised intergovernmental agreement between the Airport Authority and the city." The authority wants the council to take possession of the road so it can be paved as a public road and not a driveway.

Without the road, the authority will be unable to lease the hangar space it just built. The authority hopes the six hangars with higher "commercial" lease prices will earn about $4,000 a month in extra revenue.

The authority and council met last week to hammer out a new agreement, and with funding issues resolved the main issue left on the table was the length of the contract.

"Regardless of how well the meeting went, we don't have an agreement," Brown said, adding that he felt it was prudent "to get everything in order."

"We're committed to what they're trying to do," Brown said.

The authority is seeking financial assistance from other parties who would benefit from the road being paved, including the Peachtree City Water and Sewer Authority and Pathway Communities. The Airport Authority plans to take out a loan for the remainder of the project.

Brown said he is concerned that funds to pave the road will come out of the city's Local Assistance Road Program, which are already earmarked for certain roads. Brown said Airport Manager Jim Savage has assured him this is not the case, but he wants it confirmed in writing.
