Braves honor PTC woman for playground fund-raising efforts

A Peachtree City woman was recently honored with the Atlanta Braves Foundation's Community Leader Award.

Colleen Sugar was presented with the award by Braves pitcher Kevin Millwood before a game last month. The award is presented each year by the Braves Foundation to a community volunteer who has made extraordinary efforts in "making our world a better place."

Sugar has been a driving force behind the fund-raising effort for the Luther Holt Memorial All Children's Playground, which is designed for children of all abilities, including those who use wheelchairs and walkers.

Sugar received a $1,000 check, to be used for the third phase of the playground, which has an estimated price tag of $100,000. She and her family also received Braves memorabilia and free tickets to the game.

Sugar chairs the committee that was appointed to lead the fund-raising effort by the Peachtree City Recreation Department. She was nominated for the honor by her fellow committee members, who managed to keep it a secret.

"It's quite an honor and we had a great time at the game," Sugar said. "The $1,000 will definitely help towards Phase III."

Sugar started the playground effort after writing a letter to the city pointing out there were no accessible playgrounds and offering to help build one.

The playground, located at Picnic Park behind City Hall, is linked with ramps and accessible bridges and also has a special rubberized surface for additional accessibility and safety.

For information about donations and sponsorships available for the playground, contact the Recreation Department at 770-631-2542.
