PTC golf cart driving age not officially lowered yet By JOHN

Judging by the jubilant reaction of the 15-year-olds at last week's Peachtree City council meeting, they're more than ready to be allowed to drive the family golf cart on their own. But they had better put the brakes on their plans until the council can officially amend its current ordinance. That isn't expected to occur at least until the next scheduled council meeting on Thursday, Sept. 5, meaning the earliest the youngsters can drive on their own or with a friend who's at least 15 is Friday, Sept. 6, according to city spokesperson Betsy Tyler. At last week's meeting, council agreed to lower the unsupervised driving age to 15 and allow such drivers to have a maximum of one passenger who must also be at least 15. Council also decided to allow grandparents to supervise young cart drivers as young as 12; previously that duty was left up only to parents or legal guardians. Another change council agreed to was to forbid anyone from riding in the lap of a cart driver for safety reasons. Several citizens pointed out that such scenarios can be seen on the cart path system all the time. City Attorney Rick Lindsey said last week that he had not prepared draft ordinances for the matter since he was unaware which directions council would go on the matter.
