Clayton State schedules CE classes for Peachtree City

In an effort to serve the post-secondary educational needs of the metro-Atlanta community, Clayton State will operate and offer Continuing Education classes in Peachtree City beginning fall 2002. Classes will be held in a suite in Peachtree City's Tennis Center at 10 Planterra Way, Peachtree City.

The facility, referred to by the Fayette County Development Authority (FCDA) as the "University Center," will initially focus solely on Continuing Education courses. Clayton State plans to proceed with offering academic courses in Peachtree City as soon as is feasible, following market research to determine the needs of the local population, and approval by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.

For the Fall 2002 semester, some 21 Continuing Education courses are planned, including How to Start a New Business, Medical Billing, Spanish for the Construction Trade, and Marketing on a Shoestring.

"The University Center will ultimately fulfill local educational needs by offering credit and non credit classes," says Dr. Wallace Shakun, Clayton State's dean of Continuing Education. "Credit programs are currently being evaluated to determine need. A non-credit fall program of classes will be introduced. The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will have representation as required. SBDC will offer courses to help businesses develop."

Partners in this educational endeavor include Clayton College & State University, the FCDA, the Development Authority of Peachtree City (DAPC), the Peachtree City Tennis Center, Newnan Utilities, Peachtree City, Fayette County Commission and the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce.

"With (the) population (of Fayette County) approaching 100,000, the business community, leadership, and residents have repeatedly expressed their need and desire to have a facility located in Peachtree City that would offer both credit and non-credit courses. We are pleased to bring a number of community partners to the table to facilitate this vital opportunity," says the FCDA Chairman Randy Hayes.
