Coweta County's branch of the Georgia State Patrol may soon have a new home.

The Coweta County Board of Commissioners voted after its executive session of Aug. 6 to continue its efforts to provide a new headquarters for the Newnan Post of the Georgia State Patrol by proceeding with the acquisition of property for that new headquarters building.

The new State Patrol post was listed among the projects to be funded under the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) extension approved by voters in 2001. Public Information Officer Tom Corker siad nearly $1.5 million was allocated in the vote for purchase of property and a new building.

The current location for the GSP is on Temple Avenue. Corker speculated the new site could be located near more of the county's main arterial roads and Interstate 85.

During the Board's Executive Session, the Board voted to "authorize staff to proceed with the acquisition of site X for the State Patrol headquarters."

The Board of Commissioners has expressed a desire to see this project move along as quickly as possible in order to provide a state of the art facility for the local State Patrol operation.
