Attendance nears 18,000

Coweta County's 27 schools counted 17,878 students on the second day of school Tuesday morning.

The second day count showed an increase of 816 students over last year's second day count (of 17,072).

The 2002-2003 first day attendance figure of 17,404 (reported Aug. 12) has been revised upward, to 17,696. The revision comes because Central Educational Center students not in the first count of attendance figures were added later in the day. The second day total includes all students present at the first bell of the day Aug. 13 at all schools.

Historically, students have continued to register after the first day, and schools continue to transfer student's records during the first days as well. The most accurate enrollment count (as opposed to attendance count) for the new school year comes at the end of the first enrollment period Sept. 9.

High school officials particularly stress the importance of students enrolling or returning to class as soon as possible at the beginning of the new year, to avoid significant loss of instructional time.
