Local teachers win Excellence in Education Award
Three Fayette teachers have been awarded the BellSouth Excellence in Education Award. Linda Hall of Hood Avenue Primary, Wendy Mashburn of Flat Rock Middle and Faye Williams of McIntosh High School were among the 24 teachers from seven metro Atlanta counties to be selected for the award. Students, fellow teachers, administrators and parents were invited to submit an application explaining why their teacher of choice should be an excellence in education award winner. Approximately 700 applications were received and judged by the Atlanta Braves Community Relations Department, BellSouth Foundation and Career Sports Management. Although many great applications were received, the judges were looking for more than accolades and honors, says Jason Ingram, community relations representative for the Atlanta Braves. "We were looking for something that really struck us rather than just a list of accomplishments. We wanted to hear about how a teacher had really made a difference in the classroom," he explained. All winners were invited to an Atlanta Braves game over the summer where they were honored during an on-field presentation. Each winner received a plaque commemorating the award and will have an opportunity to submit an application for the BellSouth Educator of the Year award where the winner will receive a $2,500 grant for his or her school.
