Students head back to school Monday

Over 1,400 teachers were back in Coweta County classrooms this week, in preparation for the arrival of students this Monday.

Teachers used the week as "pre-planning" to get their classrooms ready and meet with administrators and colleagues in preparation for the new school year.

Schools, too, use the week to get ready, and will be open to register new students, register for after school programs, and welcome students and parents.

Orientation (or visitation) days for all elementary and middle schools will be today from 1-3 p.m. This is simply a time for parents and students new to the building to visit briefly.

Teachers will not be available for conferences during visitation days. Conferences are to be scheduled at other times. Open houses for individual schools will be held at various times shortly after opening day.

Representatives from the school system's Transportation Department will be on hand during orientation days to help parents check bus routes and numbers. Otherwise, parents can get information on bus schedules and routes by calling the Transportation Department at 770-254-2820 or checking the school system's Web site, www.coweta.k12.ga.us.

Northgate principal Wayne Outlaw said that preparations for the new school year are coming along at Northgate. "We've already had some teachers stop in before Aug.6 picking up materials, getting their classrooms ready, arranging bulletin boards."

The school has already been bustling with work to get it ready, including work on new athletic grandstands, classrooms and a school library expansion.

"They're working frantically right to try to get that finished up" by the first day of school, and books are arriving this week, said Outlaw.

The eight new classrooms are scheduled for completion in early 2003.

In addition to returning teachers, Northgate will welcome about 10 new teachers this year. In all, Coweta County welcomed 223 new teachers during the new teachers breakfast, sponsored by Coweta County banks. Last Thursday was the first day of a three-day orientation session for those new teachers.

Outlaw and other principals also expect to register several new students to the school during the coming week, and many schools have already started working with new parents to register their children.

Parents who wish to register their children for the After School Program can do so on August 9 at the elementary school which the child attends. Enrollment space is limited.

Times for registration are Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Aug. 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. There is a one-time, non-refundable registration fee of $10 per child. Tuition for the ASP is $8 per day.

Tuition payments made by Friday prior to the week of attendance are $6 per day reserved. To maintain a space in the ASP, parents must pay for at least one designated day of attendance each week, regardless of whether the child attends or not.

Several questions about the registration, orientation, after school programs or other back-to-school matters can be answered by visiting www.coweta.k12.ga.us, or by calling your district school.
