Habitat house built in a week

A host of volunteers from three Peachtree City churches have just completed a Habitat for Humanity house in College Park that will soon be home to a local family. Work on the structure began July 20, according to Kim Detwiler, cochair of missions at Peachtree City United Methodist Church. About 300 people worked that first day, and it paid off, as the entire house was framed and roofed in a day. After a day off (the next day was Sunday), the workers returned and put the shingles on the roof, attached the siding and spent the next several days on the interior work customarily associated with building a house. The project was wrapped July 27. This is the fifth house Detwiler's church has been involved in, and this project saw assistance from St. Andrew's in the Pines Episcopal Church and Holly Grove AME Church, she said. The house is in Faith Park, a subdivision of Habitat homes that will eventually number about 25. This house will be occupied by a single mother with two sons, one of whom is in a wheelchair. They will be moving in as soon as they take care of some details such as having utilities set up. "The house is ready to go," said Detwiler. Most of the builders worked the project around their regular work schedules, with a number of teenagers on summer break pitching in, along with some retired folks.
