Camp Ivy has week of good health

The campers at Camp Ivy a day camp for children with diabetes in Fayetteville enjoyed learning about good health from area professionals.

Speakers included dietician Joanne Woolheater who spoke about healthy food habits and ophthalmologist Dr. Brian Long, who taught about the importance of keeping blood sugar levels normal.

Other guests were Mike Patterson of the Novo Nordisk Company, who spoke about diabetes and new insulin products and Tim Wilmoth of the Griffin martial Arts Academy who brought some of his students to demonstrate good exercise and self-defense forms.

Pharmacist Clyde Bennett of Wynn's Pharmacy in Griffin, Ga., who is a Certified Diabetic Educator, spoke on healthy habits and medications and their effects on blood sugar.

Dr. Mark Crump, an internist from Griffin who is himself a Type I (insulin dependent) diabetic, held the campers' attention with a talk and question session.

Campers had the opportunity to earn prizes during the week by doing a good deed or accomplishing something they had never done, and there were drawings for more prizes. Alex Hyde and Bethany Laine won the drawings. Also, campers won prizes for keeping their blood sugar levels down. The overall winner with the best blood sugar reading for the week was Bethany Laine, who was only recently diagnosed with diabetes.

On Wednesday, diabetic nurse educator Linda Lowe of the Atlanta Medical Center taught all of the campers the correct way to inject themselves with insulin.
