Tyrone disputes wetlands violation claims

Tyrone Town Manager Barry Amos is disputing claims that Tyrone is a flagrant violator for wetlands violations.

The charges were leveled against the town during last week's Fayette County Commission meeting. Local biologist Dennis Chase told the commission that he didn't want to see any of his tax dollars flowing to the town because of its poor environmental record.

Chase said the Corps of Engineers issued an after-the-fact permit for construction on the new ballfield at Handley Park after the Corps determined there were wetlands at the sight. The Corps also determined that the damage was not significant.

"We recognize the Corps as the authority on wetlands issue," Amos said.

Chase also accused the town of using materials such as asphalt, concrete and metal to use as fill material at a ballpark at Redwine Park.

"I know there was some fill material used at that site, but that's before I got here," Amos said.

Chase said the Corps referred to Tyrone as a "flagrant violator" of wetlands issue, but Amos said the Corps has no such category.

Chase beseeched the commission not to give the town any money for park projects.

"I'm issuing a strong objection to giving any of my tax money to them. They knew about the wetlands issue well before any investigation and continued building the ballfield."
