Band is getting in the swing of things

While most students have not even begun to have thoughts of getting back to school yet, the East Coweta Marching Indians have already hit the parking lot. The students have started their ritual of having nightly practices to begin learning their music for this year's show, which will include excerpts from "Riverdance," as well as working on their marching technique.

The students have already held their election of officers for the upcoming year.

Heather Kupfer will be the new band president and Dusty Pap will be vice-president. Secretary will be Daniel Lowery and the treasurer will be Melissa Burchfield.

The band chaplain for this year will be Cody Allen. This year the band has created two new positions, woodwind sergeant and brass sergeant, which will be filled by Josh McCord and Derrick Bailey.

Mary June Bishop will be returning as head drum major but this year she will have an assistant. Crystal Ware has been chosen for this position.

The band boosters will be hosting a hotdog supper on July 25th to welcome new parents and get back into the swing of things. The boosters always encourage parents to bring theirlawn chairs to the practices to cheer on the kids during rehearsals.

The boosters are also looking for businesses who would like to help sponsor the marching band by advertising on the back of the Marching Indian truck. If you haven't seen the truck it is parked at the high school. This truck goes to all the away games and competitions and it is a great way to advertise a business. For information about this you can contact Cheryl Burchfield at 770-304-9364.

The band will be leaving for Maryville, Tenn., July 28 for a week of band camp. The students will be spending the week memorizing their music and learning the drill for the new show.

This is always a very busy week for the students. They get up early and work hard all day but the payoff comes when they hear the applause from the crowd and then later on in the year when they compete in competitions.

So if you live near East Coweta High School you can sit outside in the evenings and listen to the band or just bring your lawn chair on up to the school for a sneak peak at the hard work going on.
