GWTW collection fetches more than $300,000 By JOHN
THOMPSON
This time out, the Yankees were a lot kinder to the South. Several hundred people swarmed into Christie's auction house in New York Wednesday to bid on items from Sharpsburg's Herb Bridges massive "Gone With the Wind" memorabilia collection. When the dust had settled, the items had sold for more than $334,000. After Christie's deducts its fees, the former Sharpsburg postman is expected to receive $292,000. Christie's had originally estimated the auction would fetch $593,000 and many of the items went for considerably less than the original estimate. One of the biggest surprises at the auction was a sweater worn by Olivia De Havilland in two scenes in the movie. The sweater first appears when Melanie meets Ashley at the train station in Atlanta during his Christmas break. De Havilland also wears the sweater when she accepts Belle Watling's money for the hospital. The sweater was estimated to bring up to $6,000, but sold for more than $16,000. Other items of note that sold included: A group of handkerchiefs and scarves that were created and released when the film was distributed. The group sold for $900 and the pre-auction estimate was $600. A 1938 hardcover edition of the book owned by the actress who played Belle Watling. The book was signed by Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh and fetched $9,500. It was estimated to bring up to $10,000. A petticoat worn by Vivien Leigh sold for $5,500. Pre-auction estimates pegged the value at between $5,000-$7,000.
