Movement afoot to name PTC tennis center after Farr

A proposal to name Peachtree City's tennis center after respected community leader Tom Farr is gaining momentum.

The idea has the support of Mayor Steve Brown, who over the past few months has been at odds with Farr, the former chairman of the city's Development Authority, over several issues relating to the authority, which operates the tennis center and amphitheater in addition to supporting economic development.

Farr passed away two weeks ago.

"Even when we disagreed, he was always a gentleman about it," Brown said Monday.

A letter urging the action was read into the record at Thursday night's City Council meeting. The Development Authority is being asked to consider the matter before council takes it up.

Brown said he had "no problem" with naming the tennis center after Farr, who was eulogized as a civic leader who worked for the community's good without seeking credit for his efforts.

But Brown wants to make sure the matter is handled in such a way that a corporation could also help underwrite the tennis center through a naming opportunity.

The letter's author, Jim Price, said he felt Farr's "extraordinary service should be recognized."

"To a great extent, because of him, we enjoy one of the finest tennis venues in the region," Price wrote. "His courage, his foresight, his leadership contributed immensely to making this nationally recognized facility a reality."

Price wants to drum up support from the idea from local residents, businesses and churches.
