Senoia Police Department seeking community donations for bear program

The Senoia Police Department wants to get more involved in the community.

That's the message officer Richard Jewell brought to the City Council Monday night.

Jewell said police officers have been going to schools and talking to the students about different aspects of the police department's role in the community.

He said the department also wants to get more involved in the Care Bear program.

The program has officers keeping toys, such as Beanie Babies and stuffed toys, in their patrol cars.

When an officer is working a call, such as domestic violence or a bad accident, the officer will present the children with a toy.

"It gives them something positive to focus on," he said.

Jewell said he had bought several of the toys with his own money, and was hoping to find a local sponsor for the program.

Councilman Pat Tunnell, who works for the Coweta County Sheriff's Department, suggested Jewell also look at possible grants, since the Sheriff's Department has received one for their program.

Jewell also said the city participated in the "Click It or Ticket" program this year. The program emphasizes the importance of wearing seat belts and Jewell said it has made a difference.

Prior to the program, he conducted a study and found only 50 percent of residents were wearing their seat belts. After the program, more than 73 percent had buckled up their belts.

Jewell said he would report back to the council on other activities of the department.
