Chapman named Rotarian of the Year

The Rotary Club of Peachtree City has chosen Mary Chapman as its Rotarian of the Year.

At the end of each club year, the outgoing president, with membership input, chooses the Rotarian who has done the most to represent the ideals of the club. Donna Turner selected Chapman for this honor.

As membership chairman for the year, Chapman encouraged her fellow Rotarians to induct 33 new Rotarians into the Peachtree City club, bringing the number of members to 93 at the end of the Rotary year. Chapman held monthly meetings at her home to introduce new and potential Rotarians to all facets of the Rotary Club.

Having been a Rotarian since 1989 and only the third woman inducted into the club at the time, Chapman has served in many capacities in the club, including fellowship chairman for several years. For 2002-03, she will be director of community service. She is a Paul Harris Fellow, a Will Watt Fellow, and a Walter Murphy Fellow, all coveted Rotary honors.

Chapman spreads the message of Rotary wherever she goes and has presented flags from the Peachtree City Rotary Club to clubs in Hungary, Finland, Italy, France, Slovenia, Lithuania, and Greece.

This year Chapman also received the singular honor of being selected for the Al Daniel Award for Service Above Self. This award is sponsored annually in District 6900, to which the Peachtree City club belongs, by the Rotary Club of Buckhead in Atlanta and given to the club or person who does the most to advance membership development. However, according to 2001-02 Rotary District Governor Robert Hall, previously it had never been awarded to an individual. Chapman's efforts on behalf of Rotary made her an obvious candidate, according to Rotary officials.

During the year, Chapman helped sponsor members in Cairo, Egypt; Meriwether County, Georgia; and the Fayette Daybreak Club in Peachtree City, in addition to six members of her home club. There are currently 12 active members in the Peachtree City club whom Chapman has sponsored, including one of her sons. As a member of the District 6900 Membership Committee, Chapman was responsible for membership growth in five metro Atlanta clubs.

Besides her involvement in Rotary, Chapman is a professional Realtor with Re/Max Around Atlanta Results. She is an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City and serves on the board of directors of the Endowment Committee for Cultural Arts in Fayette County. She is married to Edgar Chapman and they have four adult children and several grandchildren.
