The Fayette County Transfer Station on First Manassas Mile Road is not the first place you associate with a hot dog and hamburger luncheon.

But Fayette County's leaders assembled there Friday to celebrate its partnership with Waste Management, Inc.

"I bet you folks have never had lunch at a landfill before," quipped Fayette County Commission Chairman Greg Dunn, as he assisted in the ceremonies.

Ray Chewning, who directs Waste Management's south Atlanta landfill operations, thanked the county for partnering with his company and outlined some of the improvements already made at the station.

The company has created a new entrance, paved the roads and provided separate facilities for commercial and residential customers.

Additionally, the company has added a deodorizing system, improved the landscaping and created a covered drop-off area for customers.

Dunn said the transfer station used to be one of the eyesores in the county, but has been tremendously pleased with the work of Waste Management.

The transfer station is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Customers can drop off household refuse for a flat fee, get free mulch and recycle many items such as aluminum cans, plastic, glass and newspapers.
