$23 million 5th high school to open in '04 By MICHAEL BOYLAN
A new $23 million high school in Fayette County will open for its first students by the fall of 2004, the result of the Fayette County Board of Education accepting the low bid for the project Monday night. Whitewater High School will be built by Kajima Construction Services, which submitted the lowest bid among the nine construction companies vying to build the school. The new school will include an auditorium, the board decided. [Earlier editions mistakenly reported otherwise.] Kajima's bid of $23,300,000 came in under the $24,299,310 that the Board of Education had budgeted for construction. Kajima was the company that provided the constuction services for the first phase of McIntosh High School in Peachtree City. The county's fifth high school will be constructed south of Fayetteville off Ga. Highway 85, in the south-central part of the county. There were six alternates in the construction documents and all but one of them will be completed. These include a guaranteed delivery date of June 21, 2004, providing Siemens energy management system, providing a "Best" access system, providing a Notifier fire alarm and smoke detection system and providing a irrigation system and sod for the practice fields. An auditorium is included in the original construction phase, Superintendent John DeCotis said. DeCotis said he was pleased with the bid and the company.
