Brown wants Hwy. 74 widening as main road focus

Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown believes TDK Boulevard should be extended to help some traffic problems in Coweta County.

But Brown also wants to make sure the extension does just not cause more traffic headaches for residents in the south part of the county.

The issue of the TDK Boulevard extension was discussed during Tuesday's meeting of the Association of Fayette County Governments meeting in Tyrone Tuesday.

Coweta County Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter was scheduled to attend the session and offer Coweta County's perspective on the road, but had to cancel due to an illness in the family.

Brown told the other leaders that Coweta County has 55-60 percent of the road, but has not obtained all the funding for the road.

The Peachtree City mayor would rather see the focus of the group work towards widening Ga. Highway 74 south.

"If we extend TDK Boulevard without widening 74, we're just creating another traffic dilemma," he said.

The widening of the road is not set until 2010 at the earliest, and Brown would like to see the county focus on getting the road done earlier.

But, he added, the county faces additional problems, because much of the Department of Transportation's focus has been on projects in the northern suburbs, such as the now-stalled Northern Arc.

"All the money's going north," he said.

Overall, Brown said the meeting was productive and fairly non-acrimonious.

"There was no blood shed," he said, with a laugh.
