July Jam coming next weekend

A host of fun things for the entire family is planned for next weekend's July Jam in Fayetteville.

Sponsored by the city's Main Street program, the event will take place at the Stonewall Village complex and offer music, arts and crafts, food and rides for the kids.

July Jam has been extended to two days this year, with many rides and activities added. This year's free concert on the square will feature last year's favorite act, the Coastline Band, back by popular demand. Free Shag lessons will begin at 7 p.m., and The Coastline Band will perform at 8 p.m.

"They've been referred to as the 'future of Carolina Beach Music,' and whether you're there to dance, listen or just watch the band perform, you bet on having a good time," said Main Street Manager Nancy Price.

The fun begins Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and lasts through 10 p.m. that evening. All kids rides and craft and food booths will be open throughout the concert this year. This is the first year July Jam has extended its operating hours into the evening.

Rides will include a Ferris Wheel, Round-Up, the Bear Affair, Granny Bug, and Tempest. Kids can also enjoy "The Titanic" slide, Noah's Arc, a giant obstacle course, the "Rain Room," as well as a rock-climbing wall and trackless train.

The "Giant Sandbox" sponsored by Toys R Us will return this year, and is always a big hit with the kids. Shoe Carnival will also be sponsoring two different moonwalks.

Radio Disney will be hosting the Kids Tent Saturday from 2-4 p.m. with fun contests and games. There will also be magic shows, puppet shows, puppet-making workshops and local entertainment happening all day long both Saturday and Sunday.

Admission to July Jam and the concert is free. All proceeds from July Jam go toward funding the historical renovation and revitalization efforts within the Main Street district.

July Jam and other Main Street activities are funded in part by annual sponsors. This year's presenting sponsors are Allan Vigil Ford and The Atlanta Coca-Cola bottling Company.
