Senoia to stage major arts festival this fall

Just before Halloween, the city of Senoia may come alive with up to 5,000 visitors strolling the streets looking at antiques and art.

That's the vision Senoia Historical Society President Perry Benson brought to the City Council Monday night.

Benson appeared before the council to get permission to stage the Historic Senoia Festival of Arts Oct.26-27 in the streets of the historic eastern Coweta city.

The festival would feature several components, he said, including a juried art show and music competition.

There will also be activities and games for the children in the city's park, along with a driving tour of the town.

"We want this to be a real Chamber of Commerce event for Senoia," Benson said.

Any cost associated with the festival would be paid for by the historical society, he added.

"There will be no city expense," he said.

During the next few months, Benson plans to work closely with City Administrator Murray McAfee to make sure the society gets all the permits necessary to stage the massive affair.

Originally, the group also wanted to stage a street dance in downtown, but Benson said that would have to wait for another year.

The City Council gave an enthusiastic response to the festival.

"I think this is going to be a real good event for Senoia," said Councilman Bob Hannah.
