Local students compete at national speech tourney

Marshall, Minn. 2002 graduate Kahlilah N. Pagan and junior Michael P. Peaden from Fayette County High School competed June 17-21 in the National Forensic League's 2002 Queen City Nationals in Charlotte, N.C.

Approximately 2,000 competitors from schools across the nation vied for trophies, scholarships and other prizes. The national speech and debate competition is sponsored by Schwan's, one of the world's leading frozen food companies.

Schwan's President and Chief Executive Officer Lenny Pippin, an NFL alumnus, said the sponsorship is a natural extension of the company's goal of providing memorable educational opportunities for young people. Pippin addressed the NFL coaches' awards assembly and presented the Schwan's Schools of Excellence awards during closing ceremonies Friday.

"My involvement in National Forensics League activities made a tremendous impact on my ability to lead one of the world's foremost frozen food companies," Pippin noted. Other notable NFL alumni include Supreme Court Justice Steven Breyer, talk-show host Oprah Winfrey, former U.S. presidents Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon, former Vice President Hubert Humphrey, former Attorney General Janet Reno, actor Don Ameche, entertainer Bette Midler and television news reporter Jane Pauley.

The National Forensic League (NFL) encourages and motivates high-school students to participate in and become proficient in the forensic arts: debate, public speaking and interpretation.
