Local student flies high with FSU circus

Jon Gulick, a 2000 graduate of McIntosh High School, is performing with the Florida Sate University Flying High Circus this summer at Callaway Gardens.

Jon is a junior at FSU and has been performing with the circus for two years. This is his second summer at Callaway Gardens, Jon is currently performing the double trapeze with partner Karen Darvil. Jon and Karen swing high on the trapeze while performing daring stunts that awe the crowd. In the quartet act, John works with two other men and a woman. John and his partner swing the woman around like a human jump rope while the other man leaps over her as she is just inches off the concrete floor. John's new act this year is a solo act where he climbs a rope to twirl and spin and tumble down the rope with no net below. All these acts plus the bicycle built for five, balancing acts, roman rings, teeterboard, and the flying trapeze will keep you breathless for the one-hour performance.

All the performers are students at FSU and receive no credit for their circus work. In addition to performing and working with children during the week, they are also the show's riggers. They set up the riggings during the show, pack and sew their costumes, and load and unload the vans for traveling. You may wonder why they risk the dangers of performing and endure the 120 degree temperatures in the tent. As they say in the show, they simply do all this for the "love of it."

Every summer since 1960, the FSU Flying High Circus has taken their best twenty-five performers and spent their summers working, training and performing at Robin Lake Beach in Callaway Gardens. There are eight performances a week Monday 8 p.m., Tuesday 3:30 p.m., Wednesday no shows, Thursday 3:30 p.m., Friday 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 1:30 and 4:00 p.m. Cost is free with Garden's admission ($12 for adults, $6 for ages 5-12, free under 5). Callaway Gardens is about a one-hour trip from Peachtree City. For additional information call 1-800-225-5292.
