UDC awards grants to essay winners

The Frankie Lyle Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, honored its essay winners with an educational grant. The luncheon was held at the Fayette County Public Library.

The subject this year was "Sidney Lanier: Georgia-born poet and Confederate veteran."

Fayette County winners were Amanda Lakeman, 16, and Dziezic "Dee" Slaughter, 14, both of Sandy Creek high School. Their essays will go on from the District Level to the State Level.

Officers were announced for the 2002-2004 term: Joan Larkin, president; Linda Robinson, first vice president; Marion Hodges, second vice president; Nancy Rice, recording secretary; Barbara Emert, treasurer; Nancy Watkins, registrar; Barbara Cooper, historian; and Gwen Ryan, recorder of military service awards.

The organization will hold its first meeting of the new term the second Saturday of September at the Jonesboro City Hall at 10 a.m.
