Three more stops, higher and wider speed humps slated for Golf View Drive
By JOHN MUNFORD
Admitting defeat in round one but committing $10,000 to a "Plan B," the Peachtree City Council has increased its bid to slow drivers on Golf View Drive, a popular shortcut through a once-peaceful residential neighborhood. "Plan B" includes lowering Golf View's speed limit to 20 miles per hour, adding three three-way stops, and extending the speed humps so they cover both lanes of traffic. Two of the three-way stops, at the intersections of Golf View and Oakmount Drive and Pinemount Drive, are on either side of "Thrill Hill," a section of Golf View that particularly worries area residents. A third three-way stop will also be erected on the other side of Golf View at Cockspur Court. The humps, which are separated by a short distance, cover only one side of the road at a time to allow emergency vehicles a way to snake around them when necessary. The problem is that regular motorists were avoiding the humps the same way, illegally, according to City Engineer Troy Besseche. One such motorist was even featured dodging one of the speed humps on a recent front page of The Peachtree Citizen Review. The humps will also be raised in an effort to combat such vehicles as SUVs which have suspensions that don't need to slow down to avoid the jarring from speed bumps, it was noted. The additional measures were approved by the City Council at its regular meeting last week. Under criticism from several Golf View Drive residents, Mayor Steve Brown reiterated that the traffic slowing plan was a work in progress.
