No property tax increases in Tyrone's new budget By MICHAEL BOYLAN
The Tyrone Town Council approved their budget for 2002-2003 last Thursday night. The total proposed budget including the Capital Improvement Budget and Sewer Enterprise Fund is $2,749,731.00. Once again there will be no increase in property taxes in Tyrone, which the council was very proud of. The main source of revenue for Tyrone is the Local Option Sales Tax which is the funding source for approximately one third of the revenues. The other items on the agenda for last week's meeting included Tyrone approving various requests. Tommy O. Davis requested relief from the 75' buffer requirement to a 30' buffer requirement for an office building being built at 1918 Ga. Hwy 74 North. The land is mainly on the county property and the county's requirement is 30'. Contractor Richard Rolader requested a two-foot reduction of the front setback for a piece of property he is building at 633 Senoia Road. He will place an additional buffer on the property. Thirty two acres of the Southhampton subdivision being built by John Wieland Homes were rezoned to limited use residential. The developers will protect the wetlands and floodplain, have a 150' buffer along Trickum Creek Rd., a 100' buffer on Swanson Rd., 25' of which will be designated a town owned greenbelt, and will tie in the multi-use trail system on Arrowwood Rd. to the library and town hall area of Tyrone. Council member Paul Letourneu was grateful that a planned waste treatment plant will not be built there and that the town will get waste treatment from Fairburn. Highland Developers request for rezoning was approved but Tyrone asked the developers to approach Peachtree City about deannexing a part of the subdivision that lies within Peachtree City. Council member Ronnie Cannon expressed concern for the future residents of the subdivision because it would lie in two jurisdictions and be confusing for residents as well as EMS services. Both AT&T and Newnan Utilities franchise agreements were approved. However, Tyrone will have to share a municipal channel with Peachtree city, while they will have their own channel on Newnan Utilities. The council expressed concern about sharing a channel with Peachtree City, but currently neither Tyrone or Peachtree City runs any programming on the channels. AT&T representative Andy Mackey promised to work with the town and make a commitment to getting a power point type presentation for the municipal channel. In staff reports, Amos told council that the Publix landscape architect will come in for the land surface permit. He also reported that The Tyrone Rotary Club named Steve Lafferty their Police Officer of the Year and Valerie Fowler their Municipal Employee of the Year. The town council meeting for July 4 was cancelled and their next meeting will be July 18 at 7:30 p.m.
