Hartsfield opens more than 1,700 parking spaces
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted a request by Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport officials to release approximately 1,769 parking spaces for public use. The spaces, located within 300 feet of the Airport's main terminal building, were restricted from motorists in compliance with a FAA mandate issued after Sept. 11. The captured spaces on levels 1 and 2 of the North and South Parking decks were scheduled to resume full daily operations Wednesday. "As the world's busiest airport, we requested the TSA and the FAA to allow us to return the spaces to their normal functions in order to meet the increased demands of persons choosing on-Airport parking," said Aviation General Manager Ben DeCosta. Since Sept. 11, Hartsfield motorists have had accessibility to 3,034 less spaces, which cost the Airport over $5.8 million in potential revenues. After conducting an extensive impact analysis, TSA representatives concluded Hartsfield could re-open levels 1 and 2 of the North and South Parking decks. Restricted parking spaces within 300 feet of the main terminal on levels 3 and 4 of the North and South Parking decks will remain closed until further notice. Last year, more than 200,000 passengers traveled through Hartsfield each day. "Prior to TSA's decision to release the captured spaces on levels 1 and 2 of the North and South Parking decks, the growing demand for air travel reduced the options motorists could select from within our parking facilities," said DeCosta. "However, the opening of more spaces will allow us to better serve our customers by providing additional resources." The remaining parking spaces are scheduled to reopen in August 2002.
