A 3-day celebration of community pride

Live music, a job fair, fireworks and car shows will be among the highlights of the 12th Annual Southwest Community Festival this weekend.

The public is invited to this free event at the intersection of Utoy Springs Road at Cascade Road in Atlanta, just west of I-285. Vintage and unique cars and trucks will be on display all three days.

Friday attractions will feature a jazz/fashion stage show, and a variety of food, information and merchandise vendors, 6 p.m.-10 p.m.

On Saturday, there will be a children's village, health pavilions, a Georgia Department of Labor job fair, and vendors 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Hip hop and R&B music will be featured noon-6 p.m., and classic soul music will be played 6 p.m.-10 p.m. Fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m.

The children's village, car display, and health and vendor booths continue noon-6 p.m. Sunday, June 23, with gospel music by church choirs, groups, soloists and dance ministries.

Sam Tompkins, owner of Wood and Tompkins Cores, Inc., started the festival in 1990 as a way to highlight "Another Way Out," a mentoring program for youth. Among board members are Fulton County Commissioner William "Bill" Edwards, who represents the area, and Atlanta City Council members C.T. Martin and Jim Maddox.

What began as a small company picnic has grown tremendously, attracting sponsors such as General Motors, Advance Auto Parts, and Fulton County Government.
