Lunsford to run for 85th Dist. House seat
John Lunsford, a Republican currently representing the 109th District in the Georgia House of Representatives, has announced his candidacy for Post 2 of the new 85th District. More than one-third of the 85th District is now part of the 109th that covers portions of Butts, Henry and Lamar counties, according to Lunsford, who called the 85th "a multi-member district designed to unseat Republican incumbents." Lunsford now serves as the deputy whip of the Republican Party and was nominated to that position as a freshman. During his first term, he sponsored and passed legislation to settle decades-old dispute between Henry and Butts counties concerning their boundary line. Some three dozen pieces of legislation were sponsored or cosponsored by Lunsford during his first two years in office, according to a written statement released by the candidate. He is most proud of his "success in cutting taxes for senior citizens in Butts and Henry counties by reducing or, in a lot of cases, completely eliminating the school tax on seniors," he said. His stated goals for continued service in the General Assembly are to reduce the size of government, decrease the tax burden on citizens, increase personal freedoms, empower the family, and encourage personal responsibility. "Lunsford is one of the hardest-working members of the House of Representatives; he has been given the nickname 'Lightbulb' because he always has an idea and a solution for the problem," said House minority leader Lynn Westmoreland. "Of course, that should be obvious when you look at how much work he does." Lunsford serves on the Children and Youth Committee, as well as the Retirement, Health and Ecology committees. His experience as a small business owner as well as running a national and international corporation has been extremely beneficial as a state representative, he said. He worked for 12 years as president and chief executive officer of Harvard Chemical Research Corporation, an Atlanta-based manufacturing company with national distribution. The company grew by more than 30 percent during his tenure as president, he said. He also spent 10 years as executive vice president of a privately held Georgia corporation which received an award from the governor as one of the fastest-growing businesses in Georgia with more than 150 offices worldwide. Lunsford is currently a member of the McDonough Merchants Association; vice president and board member of Exodus House Ministries; financial chairperson for Clubs of Georgia, a subsidiary of the YMCA; and a Partner in Education with several local elementary schools. He is also a member of the chambers of commerce for Butts, Lamar, Spalding, Fayette, Henry, Rockdale and Newton counties. He and his wife Tina have been married for nearly 16 years and have four children. He and his family have been actively involved in their local church for years.
