County nears final budget approval
By JOHN

Fayette County's $66 million total budget is heading down the home stretch toward final approval. The County Commission held a public hearing last Thursday on the hefty financial document, but only two citizens were at the meeting and voiced no concerns about the budget. Prior to the public hearing, county officials heard from the last of their department heads about their specific budgets. Library director Chris Snell wanted another full-time person, along with converting a part-time employee to full time. The board only went along with the conversion part of her budget request, but said she was doing a wonderful job at the facility. They also asked for her to bring comparisons during next year's budget sessions for yearly totals of programs at the library. Snell also added the library is growing so rapidly, that it may one day become an independent library and not part of a library system. After approving the Fayette Senior Services budget without any changes, the commission chairman congratulated the staff for doing a great job during the budget period. Finance director Mark Pulliam said department heads started working on this budget in February. "It has been a struggle," he said. The County Commission will adopt the budget at its 7 p.m. June 27 meeting.
