Hwy.92 to be relocated

Residents heading to Fairburn from Fayetteville will soon find a new hitch in their route.

During Monday night's City Council meeting, the council gave approval to the state's plan to relocate a portion of Ga. Highway 92.

Currently, the road leads straight into downtown Fairburn from Fayette. But a letter from the DOT indicates how and why the road will change.

"This plan provides for relocating the State Route 92 along Oakley Industrial Boulevard and running common with State Route 74 and State Route 14/US 29," wrote metro district engineer Stephen Henry.

Henry said the reason for the change is to remove the CSX overpass from the state system and route truck traffic entirely along the state highway system, instead of having them on Fairburn's streets.

Mayor Betty Hannah agreed with the move.

"One of those new warehouses on Oakley is going to have 500 trucks a day. We don't need that on our streets," she said.

The City Council agreed with Hannah, but added a caveat to the response to DOT. With the state abandoning the road, the city would need to maintain the traffic light at the intersection of Hwy. 92 and Hwy. 29. The City Council asked DOT to continue maintenance of the light.

DOT did not give a time frame on when the road would be rerouted.
