Peachtree Wind Ensemble welcomes seniors

If you haven't picked up an instrument in more years than you can remember, but have the time, talent albeit rusty and inclination, the Peachtree Wind Ensemble Community Band has a spot for you. The group of 30-plus members from all walks of life and all ages consistently receive rave reviews from audiences.

The group, directed by Bob Lancette, is always on the prowl looking for what they have dubbed the "Tooters, Tweeters and Bangers." Tooters include players of trumpets, French horns, trombones, tubas and baritones. Tweeters are those who play the flute, piccolo, clarinet, oboe, bassoon or similar instruments. Bangers bang on any and all percussion instruments.

Members have varying backgrounds and skill levels, all have some experience in a band at some point in their past. Bill Steadman is an example of a typical member: he played through college, took a long hiatus during his bread-winning years. Just over ten years ago he started playing brass instruments again and is now an active participant with the band.

Although many are older adults, high school students and young adults also play with the band. Steadman's two children, Jeremy, 25, and Paige, 20, have participated when their schedule permits since high school.

The popular band has been tooting, tweeting and banging to the delight of audiences for over ten years. They play every year as part of the Peachtree City July 4th celebration and entertain at numerous charitable and civic events. They also play each year at the Main Street Arts Show and host an annual concert at Picnic Park in Peachtree City. Band members practice on Monday nights from 7:30-9 p.m. at the YMCA Chimney Lodge on Huit Road off Hwy. 54 between Peachtree City and Fayetteville.

Those interested in finding out how they can become a part of this vibrant group may call Bob Lancette at 770-487-6687.
