Fayette Out Scores State in First-Time Pass Rate on Graduation Test For the second year in a row, Fayette students have the highest first-time pass rates in the state for the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT). Not only did Fayette's first-time pass rate percentages out-rank those of other counties as well as the overall state average, but students also surpassed the county's top percentages from last year. This year's students averaged a 100 percent pass rate on the English/language arts portion of the GHSGT, up last year from 99 percent. In math, students averaged 99 percent, a one percent increase over last year; science and social studies had the highest increase in averages jumping two points from last year for a total of 91 and 96 percent, respectively, in 2002. In comparison, the state's overall first-time pass rate percentages were 97 in English/language arts, 93 math, 75 science, and 85 social studies. "Our administrators, teachers and parents have high expectations for student performance. We are pleased that our students continue to excel year after year," said Stuart Bennett, assistant superintendent of education for the Fayette County School System. Students must score a 500 in each subject in order to pass the GHSGT. Fayette students scored well above the minimums in each area earning high percentages in the Pass Plus category which honors students whose scores far exceed the minimum passing score. The Pass Plus scale for English/language arts is 538, math 535, science 531, and social studies 526. Approximately 77 percent of Fayette's students equaled or scored higher than the Pass Plus scale in English/language arts. Likewise, the percentage of students meeting or out-scoring the scale in math was 76 percent, science 22 and social studies 55. The GHSGT includes the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, social studies and science. Students take the test for the first time in their junior year. The writing test is given in the fall and the four content areas in the spring. Students have five opportunities to take each portion of the GHSGT before the end of the 12th grade.
